Galenicals

Galenicals refer to medicinal preparations that are derived from plants, herbs, or other natural sources. They are typically made by extracting active ingredients from these natural substances and formulating them into a usable form for therapeutic purposes. The name “galenical” comes from the ancient Greek physician Galen, who developed early methods of preparing medicines from plant and animal substances.

Types of Galenicals:

  1. Tinctures: Extracts made by dissolving herbs in alcohol or another solvent.
  2. Extracts: Concentrated forms of plant materials, often in liquid or powder form.
  3. Infusions and Decoctions: Teas or brews made from boiling or steeping herbs to release their active compounds.
  4. Ointments and Creams: Topical preparations made by blending plant extracts with a base like petroleum jelly or oils.
  5. Syrups: Medicinal liquids, often sweetened, containing plant extracts for oral use.
